    Cannot open Blink Security Center

    I am unable to open Blink Security Center (Professional Ed), it gives an error message stating that it is on another desktop (there isn't one) and that I will need to close and reopen it. Killing the Blink.exe process and restarting will get the login password but once entered doesn't show anything, trying the program again gets the same error message again.

     

    I tried uninstalling Blink (to do a reinstall) however it failed on the uninstall since it couldn't shut down the blink service, it did remove it from the installed programs list. I tried to reinstall (without uninstalling) and it installed however still getting the same error message as I did before. I couldn't find anything online for this specific problem, any suggestions on what I can do to resolve this?

     

    I'm going to try opening Windows XP SP3 in safe mode and uninstalling from there (since blink service probably won't be running, if it is, will deal with that problem then) and then reinstalling. Will check back and see if there is any responses.

    Safe mode will likely not help as the MSI installer cannot work in safe mode. I recommend launching the Blink GUI, then opening the services list (run services.msc) and finding and disabling the Blink service. After this, reboot and you should be able to uninstall.

    Also you may be able to uninstall if while the installer says that the blinksvc service cannot be stopped, open task manager and select and terminate the blinksvc.exe process. Then select Retry and it should work.

    What version of Blink did you have and any idea how it got in this state?

    Thank you for the quick reply. 

    I tried what you suggested but there was an error message about not having privileges to disable or set to manually start.

    Exact error message:

    Unable to open service blinksvc for writing on Local Computer.

    Error 5: Access is denied.

    I also tried to kill the process in the middle of the uninstall and the uninstall hung (which once I was forced to kill that had removed Blink from the install list so I tried the reinstall as mentioned). Strangely enough when I went to get the error message above for you, I was trying to manually kill the process again and the Blink Professional Administrative screens appeared out of no where. This has never happened before. Also, the blinksvc was preventing me from doing anything once that screen appeared until I killed the process completely out of the task manager. Once it was gone, I could use the Blink professional administration and blinksvc showed up by itself shortly afterwards.

    I do not know when this started exactly nor what the cause of it was. The main problem with Blink is that when trying to open the Blink GUI, you cannot open it, the GUI itself gives the error message I described (open on another desktop, close and reopen).

    This has happened before and basically a reinstall of Windows solved the problem however that's a little too drastic of an action to take on the second occurance of the same problem, always on the same machine. The other 4 machines have experienced no problems.

     Update: I managed to uninstall Blink "successfully". It appears that everything was uninstalled, the service was gone and while the diagnostic tool was left, did not see any other trace of blink running. Tried to reinstall, it completely failed, it did a partial install before completely erroring out of the install. The blinksvc was in the Services list however it wasn't active. I couldn't uninstall because there was no blink in the add/remove list. Also, no further install attempt would succeed because it wouldn't allow write access to the blink folder to add additional folders (such as quarantine).

     

    At this point, have done a reimage of the machine before I did anything with it so I'm back where I started before today (mostly because there was no security at all on it and couldn't install one).

     

    Is there a cleanup agent to remove a partial/failed uninstall which I could run once the normal uninstaller has gone through so I can install it normally again?

    Odd, I thought I had posted a reply for anyone that finds thread looking into this issue... I'll do it again.

     

    We couldn't resolve. In the end we backed up and pulled an older image which worked and restored from that point. We are monitoring to see if it happens again on this machine.

     

    And in this instance, reghacking to kill the services worked to get it to uninstall but the admin accounts were all corrupted by the uninstall.
