Help Help Help - had to Uninstall Blink!

    Hi, all

Today (10/29) got a note that Blink needed to be restarted to download overnight update.  Rebooted.  Blink couldn't start.  Windows told me to go to Control Panel and under Programs -  right click to have Windows repair Blink (this worked before - some time ago.)  This time it did not work.  I rebooted several times and I kept getting a Blink message saying that I was using an invalid password - however I don't have ANY password for Blink - nor anywhere, including logging in to Vista.  Another error message Blink gave me was that I was running another version of Blink which needed to be shutdown before startup version of Blink could start -  and 'tho no Blink icon in my systray - Task Mgr did show Blink as running.  Lastly thru all this, I couldn't get on the internet via my AOL dialup.  So I have uninstalled Blink and was then AOL got me online OK.  I would like to reinstall my paid version but have no idea how to do that.  Any help? ? ? ? ?    Thanks!

I would un-install and re-install Blink.  I have made some helpful instructions here:  http://forums.eeye.com/forums/t/752.aspx

If you can't remove your license properly (because you can't access Blink) email lnicula@eeye.com or bpatten@eeye.com and ask them to release it for you.

When I uninstalled it - Windows asked me whether I wanted to uninstall Licenses, etc. to which I responded 'no.'  Must I physically delete these files before reinstalling?

Nicula will have to comment on that.  I normally (before I un-install Blink) go to the License Management option under Blink's Help menu and select Transfer license.

    Blue,

If a customer needs licensing help, they must email licensing@eeye.com. If I receive inquiries about it, I always forward to that mailbox and the folks that have access review and process the issue.

    Thank you.

Thanks for trying to help, Blue1978.  I don't know why someone can't just tell me if I can reinstall Blink?   Nicula must be REALLY busy and bpatten just redirects me.   I've been without Blink now for several days and am very concerned!  Why did I even buy this protection if it can't protect my system?!  Never had any problem with the FREE version!

Yes, there is no reason why you can't re-install Blink, go ahead and do it.  I was simply saying that if you had any license erros upon re-installing it, that you will need to email  licensing@eeye.com with the order number, email address used when you made your purchase, and that you need your license reset.

I went to my original license installation page - tried to re-download it and was told (the paid version) redownloads are LIMITED TO 30 DAYS ! ! ! What is up with that?   And, I have YET to get email response re licensing, etc - despite the fact that my time was wasted in initially emailing the WRONG etech address I was given when I purchased! ! ! ! !  And,  I never got any assistance with a MS-related Blink removal issue.  Needless to say I am now totally underwhealmed by Blink - in everyway possible!  You've been great though - you've always actually tried to help me. Lastly, since Blink is no longer in my system - everything works so much faster.   Blink was great when it was free - once they get our money - they're like politicians - they don't need to respond - they've cashed our checks - in more ways than one.  Blink Stinks!

You should be able to download the free version from the link below and then enter your license key that you have when your prompted to.

    http://eeye.com/Downloads/Personal-Software/Blink-Personal-Edition.aspx

Simply fill out the registration portion when asked to.  The email address and password you give it, remember it, in case you have to come back to download it again.

And, I have YET to get email response re licensing, etc

Did you attempt to resend an email to the licensing team?

Keep in mind, if you told the system to leave your license and settings on your system (like you told me you did) then you might not need to worry about having to reset it when you re-install Blink and put it in again.  You won't know until you try.

Thanks, Blue1978.  I'll try the freedownload in the AM.

Yes, as I stated, when Windows asked about deleting all licensing info (as I was unsure what my answer SHOULD BE, I answered 'NO" and have since found all the licensing stuff (3 file folders) which seem to all be there.

If you aren't on Blink's payroll, you really should be - and if you ARE - you should ask for a BIG raise!

Fingers crossed - tomorrow shall be my final attempt - if it doesn't work - I'm going to demand my money back!  And no, I didn't re-email correct etech - the autoresponse said I'd hear back from them in whatever order my email was received.  Right.

    I'll post back either way.

Re: Help Help Help - had to Uninstall Blink!

Realizing how HUGE a download Blink is and it'll take hours as I have a dial-up, I thought I'd go ahead and download from the site you provided tonight, well, lo' & behold, I got this message from Firefox:
    "This Connection is Untrusted
You have asked Firefox to connect
securely to eeye.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.
Normally, when you try to connect securely,
sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are
going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.

    What Should I Do?

    If you usually connect to
this site without problems, this error could mean that someone is
trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.

    Technical Details

eeye.com uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is only valid for www.eeye.com

    (Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)

    I Understand the Risks

If you understand what's going on, you
can tell Firefox to start trusting this site's identification.
Even if you trust the site, this error could mean that someone is
    tampering with your connection.

    Don't add an exception unless
you know there's a good reason why this site doesn't use trusted identification."

What do you think this means?   I have NEVER gotten this type of warning from Firefox before - ever!  Has Blink gone down the rabbit hole?

No "security" system should be so user UNFRIENDLY.  As a footnote - no security system I've ever used has been so difficult to interact with - it's almost as if you must have a PHd in security software just to maintain Blink on a daily basis!  BLINK STINKS STILL.

    Winifred:

No.  This has to do with the website, not Blink.  A lot of websites (to include my bank's, Hushmail, etc) do not have the "www" in their actual URL, but in their certificate they do.  For example, eEye's URL was simply https://eeye.com.  Firefox saw that eEye's SSL certificate said it was for www.eeye.com, so it choked on it as a precaution.  The reason being, a malicious person (if they wanted to) could set up a site looking exactly like eEye's and then for the URL use https://me.eeye.com.  9 out of 10 times the average person would not pay attention or notice this and get caught by it.  Firefox is just trying to do the best it can at catching such things.  It all balances on security vs useability.  Sometimes more security means more little annoyances here and there at times.

Well, most home Security applications are not like Blink, so I can see your point there.  You have to remember Blink started as an Enterprise security application.  Trying to create a home version of such an application is sometimes difficult (unless you want to change the base code a lot and then you have to maintain two separate code bases).  Normally a lot of the enterprise level solutions have a lot more by way of settings and functions in them too.

Trying to control licenses and such in an enterprise environment is difficult (to keep people from trying to "fudge" them and create fake ones that the software maker can not maintain).  Some applications have to have their own server to track these, in Blink, eEye tries to build it within Blink.  So unfortunately, you are going to have these issues.  As far as email addresses to send license questions to, I have no response to that.  That is simply a mix up by the website administrator (whomever does it for eEye's website) I don't know.

Re: Help Help Help - had to Uninstall Blink!

Blue1978 is right. The issue is with how the SSL certificate has been issued. If you just add www. in front of eeye.com you will not see the warning. I believe we will move to a wild-card certificate issued to eeye.com soon and so this issue should disappear.

Now, regarding your issues with Blink what I am really concerned with is the fact that after you updated Blink it did not start properly.

Can you please email me this file at inicula@eeye.com ?
