    Regarding purchase and free key

I have two keys, one free and one year paid. I decided to start with a fresh install with a new larger drive and in preparation had uninstalled Blink and took the survey during uninstall, noting that I would be reinstalling (this is the paid version). Why I've bothered to post this is during a restore (I had formatted the drive) of a file that was missed in my backup and found a partial text file saying to email eeye some code that got trucated. Do I need to work harder at getting this code prior to installing on my new, larger drive?

Does this work the same way for free keys?

     Lance,

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly. You say you want to do a clean install but then you say your backup is fouled up. Could you clarify what are you going to restore? What type of backup did you do? Was is a normal backup of files or ghosting of a drive?

    Best regards,

    Art

Re: Regarding purchase and free key

As I said, I installed to a new drive. I did a backup to DVD but missed a few things and after I had formatted the old, smaller drive. In attempting to get some of the pictures I had missed off the old drive using Easy Recovery Pro, I also saw that there were other folders and files. Being curious about anything else I might have missed, I noted this text file that was either truncated of crosslinked (yet another reason to get a new drive). I have a three characters of the code, but it appears to not be a dictionary type word, it looks similar to the key code I use at install.

It's a rather straightforward question - Am I able to activate the software properly without emailing this code as the text file instructs? I'm hoping the fact I filled out the survey, and I hope it is safe to assume that the key code was sent as part of the URL for the survey.

To clarify, I don't need tech help with my backup, I need to know if my software will activate properly without sending this email, and nothing more.

I think this one should better be answered by eEye stuff.

Re: Regarding purchase and free key

I looked throughout the forum and found a similar thread, but post install and failure to activate. I'm hoping to avoid that problem if at all possible, but it appears there is something similar to a hardware hash so in theory, it should see the install as being on the same computer.

I'd still like confirmation I do not need the code, nor the email to ensure proper program activation.

Re: Regarding purchase and free key

    Lance,

Each of your serial numbers can be used on the same host, and you should be able to install it again without having to reset it.  Our licensing enforcement verifies the host is the original one from the hardware configuration.  As you've probably read, it occasionally might get it wrong )or possibly there was simply a change that the user was unaware of).  Regardless, I would proceed with the reinstall of Blink after you reimage the host, but if by chance it should warn you that the serial number is already in use, please send me a message directly (via your personal "Inbox" available in the upper right hand corner of the forum).  We can reset it after obtaining some information from you.  As for the message that suggests you needed to fax or email us directly, feel free to ignore that for your specific scneario.  This is often only required if the system is offline and can't reach our servers to validate the license either upon installation or during license management.

So you know for next time and for others that might be reading this (will post also to the Known Issues and FAQs), the suggested steps when reimaging the host or when "transferring" the installation to another separate host (the serial can be used on a different host if you properly terminate the serial number) are as follows:

Backup your existing ruleset and configuration:

    1) From the Blink menu select: File -> Export -> Export Active Rule Set

    2) From the Windows "Save As" dialog box that appears, assign an arbitrary name.  Save this file where it can be later retrieved.

    Transfer the license:

    3) From the Blink menu select: Help -> License Management

    4) In the dialog box that appears select: "Transfer license".  Click Next.

    5) Then, select: "Yes, I want to remove my license from this machine.".  Click Next.  This will free up the serial number (and the installation count) on our licensing servers

    6) Finally, you can then uninstall Blink completely.

Import the saved Active Ruleset from previous installation

    7) Either on the different host you are transferring the installation to or on the same reimaged host, proceed with the Blink installation and when prompted for the serial number, enter the same number that you previously terminated.

    8) From the Blink menu select: File -> Import

    9) Navigate to the exported file from above and click OK.  Your rules and settings should be restored.

Lance, since you already reimaged your computer but have access to the original files, you can restore your original rule set and configuration by retrieving the file: machine.xml.  This is located in the following directory (default installation path listed):

    C:\Program Files\eEye Digital Security\Blink\Config

By replacing the copy in the new installation (Shutdown Blink first, replace the file, and then restart Blink), this effectively performs the Export and Import available from the Blink Interface.  The benefit from doing it from the File menu is that the ruleset will take affect without having to restart Blink; otherwise it accomplishes the same thing.

    I hope this helps.
