blinksvc.exe running away with my CPU

I am using 4.2  free version. I am considering going to the paid version and loading on 3 computers. My one concern is that blinksvc.exe, as shown in TaskMangler, is consuming tons of CPU -in the 80-95% range.  I've seen other posts that indicated I should change the .ini and another that states not to.  This is not connected to opening Outlook/email or opening Control Panel (I've seen these other posts).

I've read that the cause is a contorted dance between blink and the process manager (injecting threads). My question is:

    1. is there a fix or a work-around for this?

    2. would the paid version behave any differently?

    Running:

    Windows XP SP3

Old Dell, with Intel 3.06 HT and 1GB memory

Have you been able to round down what the cause of this may be, by either disabling sections (Intrusion Prevention, AV components, etc) of Blink one by one and observing system usage?

I haven't tried to isolate to debug, but it's a good idea. Thanks!

I was thinking that I can't be the only one who's had this problem and that there may already be a known workaround or fix.

Still, I'll try your suggestion and see if that can provide more information. As a side note, I'm not running the firewall (I used blackice)

No, Blink Professional and the paid for version of Blink Personal Edition are identical to the free version of Blink Personal.  Blink Professional just has a few extra features, configuration abilities, and comes with support via your own customer portal.

I found that disabling Virus and Spyware protection eliminated the problem of excessive CPU consumption.  Unfortunately, for me, that's the most imporant protection that I'm seeking.

Not sure where to go from here; i really like the product, but i really can't deal with my computer becoming unresponsive because blink service is hogging all the CPU cycles.

P4 3.06 with HT, right?  I have a similar specs with 2gb of RAM and I haven't really ever experienced excessive CPU usage-- and I push all of those glorious P4 hyperthreads to the limits.  I'm not convinced just yet that it is completely a Blink issue.

Like I said before, I am not completely convinced that the issue is strictly Blink.  You said that BlackICE is installed with Blink, so it could be that BlackICE doesn't interoperate well with other security programs.  Are you launching a ton of applications or doing alot of very resource intensive functions (like downloading/creating tons of files)?  What about BlackICE...is it using an CPU (how much CPU usage is not relevant) during this Blink issue...?

Are you running any backup, network syncing etc type applications like Live Mesh or similiar?

I have the same issue with 4.2.4. In my case, it also interferes with SMTP outbound communication by Mozilla Thunderbird. The only solution is to reboot the computer. Web based email continues to work nicely.Task manager reports binksvc.exe using over 90% of CPU, as it is right now while typing. At times, this interferes with other tasks, loading programs etc. Just now, only email is affected, and system response is good. I've noticed that I tend to be running more than the average number of programs when this happens.

Windows XP Pro SP3 fully patched, 3 gigs RAM. Available memory 1691712 per task manager, out of 3145204 total. 884 threads with 99 processes.

    Nicula, Nomuus, Moh,

This sounds similar to the issue I am having with opening Zip files and such that I submitted:

    Ticket ID: TK034373

Subject:  Blink's AV component Conflicts with Opening zip or rar files

Just thought I would throw that in to this equation because the symptoms sound the exact same to me.  The system's CPU will practically overload itself trying to complete the task.

It also runs away with my CPU, unless I disable virus & spyware protection.  I have an Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Pro SP3.  I turn it back on and CPU usage goes straight to 90%, making my computer unusable.

    Is this INTENDED behavior?

    By any chance, under the:

Options >> "Virus and Spyware Protection" tab >> Edit Scans >> On-Access Scan section

    - was the "Scan Archived Files" box checked in your settings?
