    General Internet Lag

Since my use of Blink, there always seem to be a bit of a lag problem with my internet. Before using Blink, my internet would generally be snappier. With Blink, this is more noticable when I open a link in a new tab. The page would load slower than it should be (and sometimes the connection would time out), that sometimes I have to close the previous page, and then the page loads normally.

As for what browser I am using, that would be Mozilla version 3, and that is supposed to be faster. I know it's not the browser because I had this browser before Blink, and opening pages in multi tabs would load normally.

Right now my settings are pretty close to the default. I haven't checked too many rules. I know that checking some rules can make things a lot worse. But it's just that I know that my internet could be faster. I even use a cleaner, such as CCleaner, and Comodo's reg cleaner. I used a lot of those things, yet they still do not seem to help make things faster, or fix the tab problem.

So are there ways to maybe make things faster? Otherwise, I think this should be something Blink could improve on to make internet browsing faster.

    Re: General Internet Lag

One of the main reasons this occurs is simply because Blink is doing something "most" all other security applications are not doing: Protocol Analysis (not port based protocol analysis which comes to everyone's mind first!).  Blink is also conducting this on numerous levels of the OSI model too.  Other security applications are looking for particular "behaviors" that are signs of attacks, but they are not analyzing the protocol.  For one example, most firewalls will ask you to allow outbound HTTP (when you open a web browser) after you allow it, they go about their business and ignore anything further passing via that HTTP connection.  Blink on the other hand continues to scan the HTTP Protocol itself after allowing it.  While this is a much better way of catching attacks, you do lose a slight bit of performance because of it.

I am quite sure eEye can elaborate on things much better than I can.

I can vouch that Blink does slow internet surfing a little, but for the security it provides compared to everything else, I think it is worth the compromise you have to make.  The hard part is finding a balance between security and useability.

If you curious about Protocol Analysis, here is a brief article on it (dealing with the security application "Wireshark" which is used for the example):

Thanks for the explanation. It's not all that bad, just noticable when opening multiple tabs. But I can understand that security is more important. Just wondering if there is a way to make things run better but still be secure.

I am sure it can be improved upon, but I know from the standpoint of what they have crammed into one security suite:

Dual firewall, AV, IPS, and Application Protection a lot can happen.  I am hoping that things will smooth out some when Norman pushes out there updated AV engine things will smooth out some.  I had created another post asking about it, but I have not seen a response to it yet.  I was hoping to get more information as to what the "upgrade' consisted of and what it brings as far as improvements to Blink's performance.

If there is a web site which exhibits this issue, try to reproduce with Blink running and Blink stopped a few times. If the difference is clearly visible, we might need to contact you for reproducing details.

    Thanks!

I will tell ya what I can do.  I don't know really how much this will help anything, but here is an idea.

Since I have Verizon's FIOS 20mb/5mb internet package (pretty steady bandwidth for testing purposes - if you will) I was thinking of doing the following for a general test.

    Picking a speed test site.

In VMware I will be running Windows XP Home Edition running with 1024mb of RAM.

My connection will be bridged to my host's NIC, hence the VM will be receiving its own IP and it will not be NATed in anyway.

I will use a screenshot program and then do the following:

    1.  Conduct a bandwidth test with Blink OFF

    2. Conduct a bandwidth test with Blink ON (only Firewalls active)

    3. Conduct a bandwidth test with Blink ON (only the AV active)

    4. Conduct a bandwidth test with Blink ON (Only the IPS active)

Not sure how this will help at all, but we can see or should be able to see any general bandwidth effects that Blink may impose on the connection.

Nicula, if you have any speed testing websites you would like me to try this on, let me know.

I am trying to keep this as controlled as possible, hence in a VM with no other software installed.  If you want me to try let me know.

Alright, here is the official Bandwidth test that I did with Blink.:  http://forums.eeye.com/forums/t/897.aspx

This was not conducted in a VM as I originally planned to do.  This was on my actual computer system.
