Problems setting up second asset. Unable to connect to web to register or update.

I am having a large amount of issues setting up a second instance of Blink Personel on my laptop.

I continue to get no connection to the internet to allow for registration or updating yet I can connect like this without a problem.

The original computer was an xp system. This sytem is a Vista system with service pack. I used the same install program on both but could not get this laptop to properly register online or get it to update when it was registered offline. It seems that it will not connect to the net.

I previously had Norton 360 on the computer but did an uninstall to get rid of it.

I am running this system wirelessly to a cable modem.

My other computer is at my girlfriends house, in case a difference of ip addresses makes any difference.(On it I am currently trying to solve a network printer issue but I don't think that is related to this.)

I just tried a couple of other methods listed on here. Using http://download.eeye.com/html/products/blink/personal/installer/blinkconsumersetup.exe

It did seem to remove and restart the system as mentioned, but could not do an online update directly so I had to do the offline update.

When it started I tried the update feature again and still can't get updates.

    Always keeps saying:

eEye Auto-Update: Failed to send the update request to the web server.

Application Bus: One or more dependancies of the currant application failed to be updated.

Blink Antivirus engine: Failed to send the update request to the web server.

Blink: One or more dependancies of the currant application failed to be updated.

This is getting very frustrating. Please help.

Re: Problems setting up second asset. Unable to connect to web to register or update.

Spare, I think the problems are a little more fundamental, perhaps relating to a firewall, than related to Blink.  Let's review:

    XP computer:

    • now at girlfriend's house
    • Blink works OK
    • network printer issue
    Vista computer:
    • at your house
    • used to have Norton 360
    • not sure about your connectivity to Internet from other applications
    • Blink is blocked
Look carefully through all the software on your computer for remnants of Norton, Symantec, or other security programs.  Also check the Windows firewall to see if it is blocking Blink, as well as the Windows Defender.  Look for other crapware bundled with new Vista computers that may be interfering.
Ensure your Microsoft updates are patching completely.
Turn off Defender completely, as well as the Windows firewall, and delete all other security programs.  You have Blink installed, and are somewhat protected by your wireless router.
You might want to have another computer-savvy buddy come and have a look, too.  If your computer is new enough, make use of all free support provided by the manufacturer or retailer before the 90-day period is up.
Good luck, and let us know how it went.

Re: Problems setting up second asset. Unable to connect to web to register or update.

I've checked most of these but rechecked again just in case.

    I have:

    Defender: OFF

    Windows firewall: OFF

I only have a symantic folder for live update: Due to a previous backup program.

No Norton Folder (removed program through add/delete programs). Had to manually delete folder.

    No other security folders.

I don't know how to check for and remove dll`s etc.(I do wish all software manufactureres were required to produce some program that would check if all pieces of it were removed.)(Or somebody designed a program to check all dll`s etc. and list what they are attached to.)

Task manager (as full as it is, does not seem to show any security software other than blink)

    for blink it lists:

    Blinksvc.exe

    Blink.exe

    BLINKRM.exe

    eeyeevnt.exe

Only process right now I can't tell is GFNEXSrv.exe.

The laptop is an older ASUS F3K Series over a year old so I have no warranty.

My router and service is from Telus alberta. I set it to pass tcp/udp for port 2000 because I think I saw that somewhere in here.(Done after everything else failed.Still no good)

Can I ping a port or some other way to detect where or what is stopping the connection? Or to check where a port is being redirected.

Or is it possible that some part of Blink did not get deleted and reinstalled that I could check?

I can use every other program that accesses the web just fine.

I can go to security sites so I don't have that worm/virus.

    Please help.

P.S. It might be a good idea to design and program a checker to see if all previous security software has been removed properly. Otherwise it seems that there is an incentive for other companies to leave behind parts of their programs. This allows them to make it more difficult to switch companies.

A ha I just checked a different post on a serial number problem and it referenced Blink going through IE. I checked my IE ( because I only use Firefox) and discovered it does not connect either. I am going to try and find out why and how to fix it. Any suggestions?

Re: Problems setting up second asset. Unable to connect to web to register or update.

Damn That didn't fix anything so far.

IE was set to work only in offline mode.

    Changed that. No change

Reduced protection to a minimum. No change.

    Set as default. No change

Restarted with all changes. No change.

I think later i might try a complete delete/reinstall with these changes. Right now I'm too tired from banging my head against a wall.

Damn can't close Blink window as it says must close update first.

Had to redo update and reclose it a couple of times before it seems to have noticed.(may also be a timing issue with update closing)

I love Blink due to all its vulnerability assesments etc. but this is a pain.

Can you please use the eEye Diagnostics tool to enable the licensing debugging and after getting the error send us the resulted debug_lic_blink.log to blink.debug@eeye.com?

    Thanks!

Spare, you are in good hands with eEye's tech support, but I had some other suggestions to follow after you provide them the log.

    1.  Use the Norton Removal Tool to remove all traces of that Symantec crap.

    http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

    2.  Run a registry cleaner like CCleaner after deleting it, and all other crapware bundled by your manufacturer or retailer.  Then restart.

    3.  Take good notes of what you did, and try again.  Then send the second log with your notes of changes made, errors received.

    4.  Telus Alberta eh?  I am in Calgary.  Send me an email through the forum if you are too - maybe you can buy me a muffin and hot chocolate while I have a look at your laptop.

    Good luck

In all honesty I know you don't want to hear this, but, I would highly recommend (at this point) just re-installing Windows from scratch, update it, and then install Blink before any of your other applications.  You will find that it gets rid of a lot of the headaches that you are experiencing, because you will no longer have all these old traces of old programs on your system that you have to battle with.  That is just my recommendation though.

You may wish to take a look at this user's post also for some recommendations:  http://forums.eeye.com/forums/p/917/3940.aspx#3940

I missed this the first time.  If IE does not work, then I am sure your Microsoft Updates are not working either, and you have a serious problem.

Let us know how the advice from Blink Tech Support works, but if this does not work I too recommend you securely wipe your drive with something like DBAN, and reinstall your OS from the Microsoft disk, followed immediately by Blink.

Before you do, however, I would love to find out what MBSA thought of this mess.  Could you run it and post the results?
