    SUCCESSFUL BLINK INSTALL

    SUCCESSFUL BLINK INSTALL

This is a long post, but may have some info for the forum members.

August 2008 I did a clean install XP Pro SP3. BLINK was the first app to be installed on the XP system. I had problems installing BLINK, but perseverance got it installed.

BLINK seemed to install, reboot but unable to connect to internet for serial number activation. The problem was a svchost.exe running long after reboot, consuming CPU, and thus unavailable for BLINK to make internet connection. I think, but not certain that the svchost process was initiated by BLINK as part of its first run after install reboot. It seems to me the issue was corrected by EEYE staff within the week.

Others here in forum currently have problem installing BLINK, either on a Windows OS clean install, or installing BLINK for the first time on machine that previously had other security apps.

I am happy to report I did a successful install v4.2.4 yesterday. Absolutely a no problem install, reboot, activate, update and full scan success.

I am pleased to note that BLINK loads faster and GUI responds quicker. The full scan 72000 files was 5 min 9 sec. Previously the scans required 30-33 minutes.

I discovered something installing BLINK, I want to share with the forum.

WINDOWS INSTALLER is easily corrupted, seemingly from overuse. Such corruption may be cause of many installation problems with BLINK.

The August clean install XP had problems installing BLINK, also SKYPE and webcam driver. The three apps would not complete the install, or when the install was initiated XP would also initiate install of other MS apps and hardware drivers.

I determined Windows Installer was corrupted. Interestingly enough the corruption seems to have occurred during the install of XP SP3, with all patches and updated drivers.

I reinstalled WINDOWS INSTALLER 4.5, and was able to install BLINK and all other apps.

Yesterday I experienced installer corruption again, and had to reinstall v4.5 once again. I spent several hours redoing the software on my computer. Twice in six months the Windows Installer has failed.

I was migrating apps from D:Programs to C:WIN_OS. I successfully uninstalled and reinstalled several apps.

Now was the time to try migrating the large apps, including BLINK when the problems began.

GoogleUpdater could not complete the update GoogleEarth v5. I checked the forums, several people having same problems. I am thinking, OK the problem is not with my machine.

Uninstall SKYPE successfully, it will not complete the install. Beginning to think my machine has a problem.

Tried to update java, will not complete the install. Realize I have a problem.

Cannot rollback to previous restore point because I am hours into a project of total reconstruction of my OS.

I bite the bullet and reinstall WINDOWS INSTALLER 4.5.

    SKYPE and java install successfully.

GoogleEarth will not update to v5. Attempt to remove via Control Panel Add Remove, says program is not installed. Yet it is installed as I can still run GEarth.

I use REVO uninstaller and jv16 to force removal and clean reg. Successful clean install GEarth v5.

I realize GEarth could not be removed by windows installer and google uninstaller, because I had reinstalled Windows Installer.

I continue to successfully migrate a few other apps.

BLINK is the last one needing migration. I wonder if I dare since others are having problems installing. I take a break and give the decision a few hours contemplation, and decide to go for it.

Control Panel Add Remove shows no BLINK installed. This is due to install of Windows Installer 4.5.

Force BLINK removal with REVO and jv16. Revo also states BLINK not installed, but then uninstalls it anyway.

Download from eEYE v4.2.4 BLINK, and it installs successfully at C\:.

I discover that MS Office needs to be reinstalled, as it is on the machine but not accessible due to windows installer issues.

I now have successfully migrated all programs to C: It is the first time in 20 yrs on Windows OS that I have decided not to have a D: PROGRAMS drive. I have always wanted to keep OS and Programs separate from each other, for reasons of stability over corruption.

My confidence in BLINK is main reason for reconstructing my OS into one partition. The second reason is because of the excellent rollback recovery program I use.

    EDIT:

BLINK is not only faster after a clean install, it is using less resources.

    eeyevnt.exe        12,264K

    BLINKRM.exe     12,436K

    blinksvc.exe        86,000K

    Blink.exe             23,144K

    Re: SUCCESSFUL BLINK INSTALL

Good post!  I will start referencing this in other posts if I can remember to do so!

I have my 60GB hard drive partitioned also.  I use one for the OS and the programs and the other partition I store software installer packages, VMware images, and other items of interest on.  Having a smaller partition for the OS also makes imaging the partition a lot easier.

I use Acronis True Image Home 2009 for this purpose.  I keep one of my base images stored on the second partion so I can easily restore it back to the normal OS's partition if I am on the go with my laptop and issues arise.
