I got my old version of Blink updated from 3.0.1 to the 3.1 version and the upgrade was quick and painless. The whole process took maybe 10 minutes. The process was very straight forward and Blink walked me through it without any problems. It took 10 minutes because I went to make coffeee so it was really less than 10 minutes but who cares.
I also updated Blink no problems and that took just a minute or two. Then I ran a full malware/anti-virus scan and it completed in 38 mins and 7 seconds. When I was runnig AVG Anti-virus (Paid version) it took nearly 50 minutes to run and Windows defender always took about 55 minutes to complete a scan. Spybot was pretty fast and took maybe 20 minutes but it was only doing a malware scan where as Blink is doing both malware and anti-virus together so basically I saved about 95 minutes scan time using Blink with much better protection. Add up the numbers yourself. Thats a good chunk of time over the course of a year.
AVG, Spybot and Defender took 130 minutes to run all 3 programs. Blink did all they do and did IMHO a better job and did it under 40 minutes. And it didn't report every single cookie on my machine. Oh the horrors of those bad cookies......Sorry just being a little facetious. In fact AVG anti-spyware, Adaware along with Defender and a few other programs I had only ever found cookies. And now Spybot has got on the cookie finding bandwagon. Personally I don't give two shits about cookies just report on the threats I can deal with cookies through my browser if I'm that paranoid about them.
On that note this is for those of you worried about your cookies, Don't worry about them. A cookie is a text file nothing more and nothing less. They don't execute or load viruses or load trojans they are just text files. They actually serve a worthwhile purpose. Think of cookies as those rubber hoses they string across roads that monitor traffic on roads and highways thats about all cookies do they monitor pages you visit, hold login info and such. They are not really evil although it sounds like they could be pretty dastardly things and really they are not. So when all your malware programs find all your cookies they are really doing you a disservice by slowing you down. You can use IE or Firefox or Opera, Netscape or any browser to delete your cookies. You don't need any software to do that. If a cookie is not a benign text file its not a cookie. Without cookies the web I imagine would be a pretty annoying place to be.
I also checked memory usage and was really surprised. I had IE open, Outlook and Word was open, Media player was open and playing and of course Blink was running and on this machine with a gig of ram it was sitting pretty steady at 19% with maybe 2% or 3% flucuation up or down. Memory usage seemed to be pretty steady with no big spikes as some people have reported. The only real spikes in memory usage was when programs were opening up. Thats understandable!
Also all my programs are working as they should. Right now with the newest 3.1 version of blink I'd say it seems to be pretty solid in the way it runs. Theres no unusual activity or spikes in memory usage that I've noticed. Also for those that don't already know once Blink is up and running its very quiet.
Blink doesn't pester you every time you do something if you want to allow somethimg or deny it just does its job. Only a few times have I encountered a pop-up in the last month or so. Another thing I need to mention is boot time. When I was running AVG, Defender, AVG anti-spy and Zonealarm my boot time was outrageous. I could go have breakfast and come back and my computer would still be booting. Now with Blink as my sole security app my computer boots fully in about 90 seconds. To me that in itself is amazing. It also seems to run smoother and surfing speed seems to gotten better as well.
So to sum it all up on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd rate Blink a solid 9 out of 10. I gave it a 9 because it didn't make my coffee or bring me donuts, damn software. When will they get it right.
Cheers ,
snharden.
