    Recent Blink update system crash

Last night (October 21, 2008) I was using my Windows XP SP3 computer (all updates applied) and a message box appeared informing me that Blink will be updated on the next system boot. I dismissed the box, continued my work for several hours, and then put my system into stand-by mode as a I do every evening.

The next morning, I bring my computer out of stand-by, and I notice the Blink tray icon is in scanning mode. I had never notice that before when restarting from stand-by. Suddenly, my screen went blank and the computer rebooted very quickly without any warning or error message.

When my computer came back up, Blink did not start. No Blink icon in my system tray and the short-cut had disappeared from the start menu. I attempted to manually restart Blink, and was shocked to see on the Blink menu that the A/V and IDS features were disabled. The eEye Blink Engine service was also running at 50%+ CPU usage and causing the Blink GUI to be non-responsive.

I checked my Windows event logs to see what was updated in Blink, but only found the usual, "nothing was updated except the A/V definition" series of events. I scanned back a few days in the logs and also saw nothing but A/V def updates.

The only event log error that occurred after the failed start-up was in my Application event log. I see an event ID 513 from blinksvc: "The eeyeh.sys driver failed to initialize. (Error: ). If this error persists, consider performing a product Repair operation from the Add/Remove programs applet."  However, this error has not reappeared. I did not attempt a repair operation as suggested.

Eventually, I was able to get Blink to run normally. I put the short-cut back into Start Up, re-enabled A/V and IDS protection in Blink, and ran a quick Malware scan, which turned up clean.

What happened? Was there a component update yesterday? Or does it look like I may have been infected with something that either conflicted with or deliberately attacked Blink?

    Thanks much,

After the reboot the new version (4.1.3) was being installed. While the update was happening, Blink was not supposed to start and it is possible that you started it before it was done. It seems that the latest update has been applied in your case.

A future update will properly wait for the update to be applied before you can can start Blink.

I see. The abnormal termination of Windows somehow messed up the Blink update, or I manually started Blink while it was in the process of updating.Too bad Blink doesn't have an "Update in Progress..." message box to warn people away from starting it.

    Thank you very much.

I don't think its anything you did.  My system did the exact same thing right down to the system reboot.  Eeye behaved exactly as you described afterwards.

Mine did, too. But from then on, Blink fails to start automatically and I have to do it manually each morning.

If you go Start > Run (type: msconfig), and then select the Startup Tab is the Blink service set to run at startup?  Sounds like someone on your system is stopping it from starting, but I don't know what it is.

No, it does not. Should I re-install the 414 from scratch or can I add the command somehow manually? Blink runs just fine when I manually start it.

I had this exact issue - had to uninstall, then reupdate - then it was fine again...
